Praying for Sun

In the last week we've gone from sunny park days to snow.

Today we had to get out and enjoy it first thing before it melted.

I love how Eliza still has a skirt on.

Kaleb said some funny things I have to remember.

Today he broke my hanger and as I was telling him that's not nice to Mommy, he said, "But Heavenly Father created my body so I can break things!" His life motto.

Yesterday he was looking out the window at the windy snow/sleet and I was telling him about storms. Well, he folded his arms right there and said, "Heavenly Father, please help the rain to stop." Then he looked up at me kind of sheepish. I told him I was happy he prayed and that he can pray about anything and God will hear him, but shame on me because the whole time I was thinking, good luck with getting rain to stop here! But, I am not kidding, the next minute the rain stopped and it was sunny. Kaleb loved this so much that he kept praying for random things throughout the day. O ye of little faith, Jessica!

4 years ago . . .

Kaleb Scott was born.

We got back from our trip Saturday night, leaving us only a few hours to prepare for Kaleb's birthday Sunday! Luckily I wrapped presents earlier and picked out what cake I wanted to make. Sunday morning Braydan stayed home from his early meeting to make him eggs, hash browns, and bacon. (I think Braydan influenced Kaleb's food choices) He kept trying to open presents in between bites. He got Lincoln Logs,
a jumbo kite, (he also got to pick out his outfit)
nerf guns (our family favorite),
puzzle, movie, and money from grandma and grandpas.

It was fun in primary because I was conducting and got to call him up so we could sing him the birthday song. He was shy and hid in my skirt. His sunbeam teacher was so nice and got him a dragon coloring book and candy that he was excited to show me.

After shrimp and mac and cheese for lunch, Braydan read him as many books as he wanted and he fell asleep! It was a cold, but sunny day so we did another of his favorite things later: go on a walk. He got to pick the park and instead of just watching them play, which I often do, we played pirates and he was on my team. We had a blast trying to capture Braydan, shooting his ship and throwing him overboard.

After hot dogs for dinner, we asked Kaleb if he wanted anyone to come over and have cake and ice ream with him and he, not surprisingly, asked for the Dyer and Adams' kids. They raced upstairs to play and I had to coax him back down to stop and eat his cake!
Here is his shy face when everyone started singing to him. So cute!

As he was climbing into bed that night, I asked him what his favorite present was. He said, "Henry's present." His friend Henry put a little Bakugan ball and some other random toys in a tithing envelope and taped it all up to give to Kaleb. How can I compete with that!

I love my little boy. It's hard to believe next year he'll be in kindergarten! Here's some fun things about him:

He loves his dogs. He has 6 or more beanie baby dogs that he takes care of with lots of love. First thing every morning he has to check on them, feed them, play with them. Eliza even knows their names. And boy, if you don't get their names right, he'll tell you! Whenever he goes to the park lately, he brings his backpack so they can come too. He left one at the park one day and didn't realize it. We looked all over the house for Schnitzel, but it wasn't until the next week when we were at the park again, we saw someone had threw him up on the roof of the pavilion. Well, Amber tried to hoist me up there, we tried long sticks, and throwing balls at it, but no luck. We had to leave him there and Kaleb was so worried about him. Luckily, Braydan got him down later, and Kaleb happily welcomed a dirtier, more ragged looking Schnitzel.

He loves to read. Many, many times during the day he'll ask me to read a book. And that's beside our quiet-time reading and bedtime books! I've been trying to make a better effort at stopping what I'm doing and reading to him, but it's hard He'll settle for me making up stories while I'm doing dishes or whatever.

I've been reading a parenting book that encourages outside play every day, so I've been trying to get out at least for 30 min. every day. I notice a huge difference in Kaleb when we do. Boys need it. I need it! His favorite thing to do outside is "check on his raccoon food." He has a big bucket full of mud, grass, sticks, I don't want to know what else, but he calls it his raccoon food and, apparently, it has to be properly mixed and monitored daily.

Kaleb's primary teacher told me a story about him today. She's been having them bring their scriptures every week and they get a sticker reward, but they haven't ever read them in class. So today Kaleb asked her, "are we ever going to read these things?" (holding up his scripture bag).

Another time one of the bishopric members was sharing a short message in primary and showed a picture of the prophet on his phone and asked who it was. From far away, (I don't know how he saw it), Kaleb blurted out, "President Monson!"

Kaleb was so funny at the water park with his hair. He DOES NOT like his hair spiked. When we ask why, he says, "cause Kinkaid told me that." He blames everything on poor Kinkaid :) So at the pool, Braydan and Wes were teasing him that his hair was spikey. Poor Kaleb hurriedly flattened down his hair and kept asking me, "Mom, is my hair spikey?"

He's a man of routine. He wants oatmeal everday for breakfast and toast with honey for lunch. I try and get peanut butter on it, meat, veggies, but no. He'll eat those things on the side, but his toast better have just honey and butter.

Okay, I might have to add more later, but I'm tired! Good night.

mini vacation

With Kaleb's birthday this month, valentines day, and Braydan not getting a Christmas vacation, we decided a trip to Great Wolf Lodge was in order. The Dyers, Bates, and Horkleys joined us in the fun.
Dyer girls racing to the pool
We were the first ones to arrive and headed straight for the water, but it took the kids a while to warm up. Actually, every time we went it took them a bit to get used to water spraying everywhere.

They both loved racing down the slides with their friends.

Kaleb ended up loving the wave pool the most. He thought it was so funny getting tossed around and telling us when to jump.
We all took turns watching the kids so we could ride the big slides. The tornado was our favorite again, by far.

I screamed so loud, especially if I went down backwards! Thursday night after swimming, I had major eye problems and went to bed early and missed all the games. So sad! But, Friday was better. I slept with my contacts in and oddly, that seemed to help my eyes. The Dyers brought their Nerf guns so we had fun having battles, arm wrestling, leg wrestling, thumb wars, and last but not least, ape index wars. Yes, Braydan and I are the perfect couple---if you count our ape index :)

Every time Eliza woke up, either from nap or bed, she immediately wanted her "swim swoot"on and she wasted no time in getting ready. Saturday was packed with people everywhere. Braydan and I agreed that we wouldn't come again until our kids could go on the big slides with us and not on a weekend! All in all it was a fun trip. Deep down though, I think I'm not cut out for vacations. I like being home in my own bed, no crowds, my own cooking, no expenses, no stress. My favorite part is visiting and playing games with my friends and that I can do at home. I must be CRAZY!

Skirts

Eliza refuses to wear her jeans. If I even open the drawer, she runs away screaming. If I do manage to tie her down and pull them on her, she cries and pulls them off. She'll only wear dresses and skirts. I am tired of fighting so tonight I went and bought her 6 skirts at goodwill for $6.
I am so excited to see her face tomorrow. She'll probably try to wear all of them at the same time.

endurance

I guess not many can stand up to the rigors of my kitchen.

These two helpers expired rather early and I was left to recruit from a younger, more freshly napped group.
She seems happy to help so far. . .

January Blues

When Mom and Dad came for Christmas, Braydan got the twin bed out of storage for Alisha to sleep on and put it in Kaleb's room. Well, the bed never left. We decided Kaleb was old enough to move to a big bed (okay . . . and we were too lazy to move the bed back). Goodbye toddler bed!
His room was the only one I've never painted. The owners before us had a cute truck/car wallpaper border and curtains that worked, but the plain white walls have been calling my name, "PLEASE PAINT ME!" He needed an older looking room anyway because he's almost 4!

I didn't take good before picture, but here's the white walls with the unpainted wainscoting Braydan put up.
My painting "helpers."
After they wore these shirts for a day, I wondered why I didn't do it more often. No stains on their clothes and much easier to get them dressed.
After
Kaleb likes it I think
He still says he wants a spider-man room, which notion he gleaned from a magazine picture because he's never seen the movie. Unfortunately, I'm mean and want his room to stay boring. I need some frames on the wall, but not huge spider-man stickers like he wants.
A note on Eliza, one morning she suddenly decided she's done with highchairs, sippy cups, and bibs. What a mess :)

She's been calling us silly lately. The other day I pointed out a moose picture and she says, "that's a cow silly." She's constantly correcting us and tacking on "silly" on the end of things.

Saturday Kaleb gave me a scare. It was nice outside (hallelujah!), so Braydan and Kaleb worked all afternoon outside in the yard and garage. Eliza was asleep upstairs and I was finishing painting. Well, Braydan came in and asked if I'd seen Kaleb. I resisted the urge to say, "he's been with you, so why haven't you been watching him?" and went outside to look for him. Braydan said he was sanding in the garage and stopped to check on him and he was gone. We looked all over the yard and house and started asking all the neighbors. Nobody had seen him. Soon all the neighbors were looking. Wes went on bike, Tracy in her car, I got in my car and felt sick all over. Braydan told me his bike was gone, so I had no idea how far he could go. What added to my panic was the fact that Braydan WASN'T panicking. I almost wanted to shake him, but I didn't. Meanwhile, Amber stayed at the house with Eliza and she said she felt like someone was in the garage with her. Sure enough, she found Kaleb sound asleep curled up in our stroller in the garage. He never woke up with us calling or anything. I have the best neighbors ever!

Some other funny things Kaleb said this week:

"I'm cleaning up good Mom. If you guys want to help me clean up, you can (with a hint, hint tone in his voice)"

"Jesus is going to send you to the zoo!" (in a fit of rage he threatened me with that)

"Mom, bees have to brush their teeth cause all the honey they eat right? But I don't think they have toothbrushes."

Babe's Birthday

Eliza turned two on Sunday. My little baby is two (sigh). She awoke to a whole downstairs covered in balloons. Braydan almost passed-out Saturday night blowing up balloons for her,but she loved them. It was the first week church switched to 9am, so we didn't have time to do much in the morning. When I asked her earlier what she wanted to eat for her birthday, she said, "noodles and ice cream." When I asked her about breakfast, she said, "pancakes," but we ran out of time for the pancake part. I made it up to her on Monday though.

She did get to open some presents though before church.
She tossed aside the ponies, but loved her new baby. Yes, another baby.
But this one has lots of accessories, like bibs, bottles, a bed, and outfits. Girls can never have too many babies.

After church I made homemade mac and cheese, aka "noodles." Then she did her next favorite thing: took a nap (or maybe that's my favorite thing?)

After nap she got to have her cake and ice cream. Tina gave me a box of candles and other holiday stuff when she moved, so I had no idea that these were trick candles. She got lots of practice blowing out candles! She was kind of scared of them at first.
But then got the hang of it with some demonstrations from Kaleb and Kaitlyn. Amber took some cute pictures of her.

I love my sweet girl and can't remember my life before her. I'm sure we were happy, but I can't imagine Kaleb surviving without a sister to play with! It would be tragic. We love her so much. I love her crazy hair, her chubby belly, her little chatterbox voice, the way she runs, the way she pushes her hair out of her eyes. I just adore all the girly things about her. It cracks me up. I love how polite she is, always saying "thank you Mom" and "sorry Kayub" (even though it's usually him that needs to say it)

Here's a list Kaleb and Braydan helped me make about Eliza Susan:

"Loves dresses and skirts and tries to take off her jeans (she especially loves the panties that go with the dresses, which she's putting on in this picture)
Loves babies and is so sweet with taking care of them

Upgraded to 3 fingers instead of 2 (still loves her blankie too)
Likes to help me cook
loves shoes and purses. At the gym, the childcare lady says Eliza will spend most of the time trying on all the other kids shoes.

Loves to read books on Mom's lap

Loves to play with Kaleb

Likes to color

Sits on the potty forever and thinks it's fun, but never does anything

Loves to eat . . .and make funny faces while she's at it.

Funny things she says:
"Daddy can I hold you?"
"Do Zumba Mom?" She likes to dance with me. She can shake her hips like a pro
"Throw me to the sky Daddy"
"What the heck Mom"
"I don't want to go to bed"
"And it came to pass . . " When we say it's her turn for scriptures, she automatically says that. I think her reading scriptures is my favorite part of bedtime.

Her future career: harmonica playing

And performing twinkle twinkle. I think that's how she learned to sing her ABC's because it' the same tune.
Happy Birthday Sweetie Sue!
